Refugees welcome? Inter-group interaction and host community attitude formation

• We examine the relationship between refugee-host interaction and host community attitudes towards refugees in East Africa. OLS regressions reveal a small positive correlation interactions Uganda. With IV regressions, remains statistically significant with data from Kampala. It becomes insignificant Nakivale settlement. In all contexts, an important part of attitude formation appears to take place at level. The type interaction, ethno-linguistic proximity, urban vs. rural residency seem affect formation. Building upon literature on immigration, which mainly focuses Europe North America, this article explores role inter-group influencing draws first-hand quantitative (n = 16,608) qualitative collected nearby communities camp-like contexts Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia. Focusing Uganda data, for is available, perception hosts refugees. This association disappears when instrumental variable (IV) approach used address endogeneity issues, except only context used.
